Environmental Factors on Ascaris Infection in Korea

Abstract
For study of the environmental factors of the ascaris infection, the author examined the ascaris eggs in the dooryard soil, vegetable yards, sewage, and privies as well as the vegetables at markets in Seoul and its vicinity The results are summarized as follows;
1. No ascaris egg was detected from the dooryard soil of regular areas(relatively well sanitated areas), but the ascaris eggs were detected in 10 to 30% of specimens of slum areas(poorly sanitated area) and in 15/0 of them of the city stool storage tank area.
2. The numbers of ascaris eggs in every 100gm of dooryard soil were 26 in regular area but 227 at slum area.
3. The percentile of live ascaris egg was 80 in regular area but 100 in slum area. And the larva containing egg of ascaris was 8. 8% of detected ascaris eggs at slum area.
4. The average value of the E.P.G. (eggs per gram of feces) of the home stool tanks was 2,700 at regular areas and 5,067 at slum area.
5. The ascaris eggs were detected in 20% of the cultivation fields fertilized with chemical fertilizer and night soil, but in 80% of them fertilized with night soil only. 95.5% of ascaris eggs developed to larval stage.
6. The number of ascaris eggs per 1,000m] of sewage at Mapoku district of Seoul was 10.
7. Ascaris eggs were detected in 15 out of 128 market cabbages in Seoul and in 75 of 160 fields cabbages cultivated in Seoul and its vicinity. The detection rates of ascaris egg from each one of vegetable were: 19.0% in market cabbage, 9.3% in field cabbage, 18.3% in field raddish.
8. On examination the vegetables, lettuces which were grown in green houses during winter season at Mangwondong of Seoul, two larva containing eggs were detected.
9. The detection rates of ascaris eggs from each one of summer vegetable were 5.0% in welsh onion, 5.0% in onion, 36.7/o in fresh garlic, 0.6/o in garden spinach.
10. 150 pickles samples were negative for ascaris egg. The results suggest that the environmental factor is considered as main, factor for ascaris infection, in Korea, rather than by vegetable matters.
